Engineered models for studying blood-brain-barrier-associated brain physiology and pathology

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a transport that suppresses the translocation of potentially harmful substances to brain tissue. Although BBB known be associated with many kinds neuropathology, such as neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases, conventionally used animal Transwell models cannot provide sufficient information due genetic functional heterogeneity in comparison humans limited monitoring capabilities. Recently, human cell-based three-dimensional have been developed, these vivo-like structures functions. In this review, we an overview recent advances particular focus on simulation BBB-associated physiology neuropathology. To end, important factors for recapitulating vivo characteristics are described. Furthermore, approaches recapitulate using engineering methods summarized. applications study inflammation also presented.
